Recipe: German Chocolate Cake





German Chocolate Cake
1/2 cup boiling water
4 ounces sweet cooking German chocolate
2 cups sugar
1 cup butter
4 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups cake flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk, or 1 tablespoon vinegar and enough milk to make 1 cup. Let sit for 5 minutes before adding to batter
4 egg whites , stiffly beaten



  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees.
    Beat egg whites until stiff.
  2. In a bowl, pour boiling water on chocolate, stirring until chocolate is melted; cool. Mix sugar and butter in large mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs yolk, one at a time. Beat in chocolate and vanilla on low speed.
    Mix flour, baking soda and salt together.
  3. Mix in dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk, beating after each addition until batter is smooth. Fold in egg whites. Pour into 3 greased 8 inch round cake pans.
  4. Bake 35-40 minutes.
