German Chocolate Cake
1/2 cup boiling water
4 ounces sweet cooking German chocolate
2 cups sugar
1 cup butter
4 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups cake flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk, or 1 tablespoon vinegar and enough milk to make 1 cup. Let sit for 5 minutes before adding to batter
4 egg whites , stiffly beaten
- Heat oven to 350 degrees.Beat egg whites until stiff.
- In a bowl, pour boiling water on chocolate, stirring until chocolate is melted; cool. Mix sugar and butter in large mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs yolk, one at a time. Beat in chocolate and vanilla on low speed.Mix flour, baking soda and salt together.
- Mix in dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk, beating after each addition until batter is smooth. Fold in egg whites. Pour into 3 greased 8 inch round cake pans.
